Mayans, especially the women, are master crafters, weavers of the the fabric of tapestried patterns.  Distinctive fabric and design of clothing, decoratively worn by Mayan women and children, are trade marks of the different Mayan cultures.  Patterns vary from village to village, a tradition that goes back to antiquity.

Mayan territory covers parts of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvadore and Honduras.  More than 6 million people speak one of the Mayan dialects that subdivide them into groups.  Each community is a world in its own right.

Prophecy and healing play an important role in the ceremonies central to the religious beliefs of the Maya. These skills are practiced by traditional priests whose training stems from many years of apprenticeship with an elder.  Calendar priests are especially important among the highland Maya, since they oversee the all important use of the calendrical divinitory and solar counts.

Mayan art & Mayan culture

Music, song and dance play important roles in today's Mayan art and culture.  Spectacular dances give the opportunity to wear and display lavish costumes and brightly colored carved mask (representative of such creatures as the jaguar).  Masks are thought of as living beings, an effigy of the animal's essence, and as such are guarded and fed.  Stay posted for more upcoming information on Mayan art & Mayan culture today and yesterday!
