Mayan prophecy

Mayan prophecy, along with other end time prophecies, seems to be a hot topic these days. Is the world about to reach a cataclysmic ending, like some traditions predict, or can we be saved from brining total destruction on ourselevs through a shift in our consciousness, through a change in how we interact with the world?
